On the Bus

I took the bus to work last night because it was going to be crazy busy downtown with the fireworks. It was crowded and noisy, but the damndest sight was the guy who brought a full sized television onto the bus with him (not even a flat screen, but one of those big ass old ones), and plunked it down in front of the seats reserved for the elderly and the handicapped. Don't think he paid a fare for it though. Heh. Got me to remembering the time I carried a big area rug home on a bus. I got it on sale for our new apartment, but since I didn't have a car at the time, and didn't want to wait for it to be delivered, I carried on to the bus. Got some strange looks, but hey, I got it home and it sure looked nice on the floor! Also there was the time in Greece when I got kicked off a bus in Athens because I had a little stray kitten tucked into my jacket. Would have made it back to my flat if the little bugger hadn't started yowling. I had to walk about 3 miles from Syntagma to Neos Kosmos.
What's the weirdest thing you've seen on a bus? The yuckiest thing that ever happened to me was the time a couple of drunks got on and sat behind me - I heard something and looked down at the floor..the guy was peeing on the back of my seat! Put me off public transit for awhile, let me tell you.
Anyway, took the bus to work, and got there without incident. Had a pretty decent shift, my patient slept from the time I got there until 3 a.m. Didn't even wake up when his sister came in and gave him a pedicure. Those calluses on his feet didn't have a chance. He's now got the softest feet in town. He woke up for awhile and was all crazy confused, but he responded pretty well to my "nurse Jane voice"..very similar to the familiar "Mom voice". That, and the drugs. In between dealing with him,and helping my coworkers, I managed to finish the book I started last evening. The Marseille Caper by Peter Mayles, who wrote the lovely books about life in Provence. This one is a mixture of detective novel, travelogue, homage to good food and romance. Fun, light hearted summer evening reading.
Took the bus home this morning, and almost fell asleep on the way. Woke up in time to get off at the right stop, then fell into my bed and slept until 2 p.m.
