Buddy has a new buddy! Kismet had a big, beautiful baby boy at 3:45 this morning. Mom and baby are doing well, but it was a bit dicey for awhile. Thank God we had the foresight to send Kismet to the Clinic for foaling, because otherwise we probably would have lost the baby. Juan told us that the placenta started to separate early, and if he hadn't been there immediately the baby would have suffered lack of oxygen and died during birth. The Clinic assistant was there, and called Juan as soon as he saw there was a problem. Juan was there in 16 minutes and all the time he was on the road he was telling the staff what to do; Maurice had to tear a hole in the bag encasing the foal so he could breathe (usually the bag ruptures as the baby comes out), and then Juan and Maurice had to pull him out. He said it was really tough, because the boy is enormous! Then Kismet couldn't get up, and they had to rope her up using the tractor to pull her to her feet. Someone was looking out for us when we decided to send her to Juan's, for sure. There is no way Sue or I could have done it by ourselves. All's well that ends well, and we have a healthy Mom and baby, and are just enormously relieved and thrilled. He is big, chestnut with lots of white, and Juan says he's going to be an incredible mover, like his father, Rosario. He's a lot bigger than Buddy was, and I swear he's almost as big as Buddy is now. They're going to be great friends for each other later on.

I stopped at the Clinic on my way to the farm to see him. He didn't get up when I was there, but Sue said he was bouncing around when they went, and was ever so friendly. There were several people in the stall, including Sue and Jack, and the baby walked straight over to Sue and put his head on her chest and just leaned into her and fell asleep! Amazing. The stallion is well known for having really sweet tempered children, and this one seems to have a wonderful temperament.

This is it for Kismet. We are probably going to breed her again, but a surrogate will carry the baby. She's 19, and has had 8 babies, and the last two births have been problematic. We don't want to risk anything happening to her, because we love her too much. She's earned her retirement.

So, here's a couple of pictures of our newest bundle of joy! No name yet, but it will have to be something starting with R. His father is a stallion called Rosario, and tradition is that the foal's name has to start with the first letter of the sire's name.
