And in other news..
Jun. 7th, 2012 09:41 pmThings are getting busy around the old farmstead. Plans that have been in the making for ages are starting to come together; we're getting ready to tear down the hay barn to make space for Jack's workshop and the apartments that will be above it. A guy came yesterday to look at the manure pile behind the barn; he's coming Monday to start hauling it all away. It's a big, big job. Probably about 30 dump trucks worth of horse poop piled up there. The stuff on the bottom of the pile will be lovely stuff for the garden, if I ever have time to start a new one. I had to take down the fence around my old garden space yesterday so the trucks can get to the pile, and it kind of broke my gardener's heart. All that lovely soil that I've put time and effort into building, but the garden spot has to go elsewhere. Good thing it's been too cold to really start planting anything. Oh, well. It's for a good cause, a new barn and living space. The plan is to start the barn around the beginning of August, which will give us (by us I mean Sue, who is the organizer and mover of all things requiring business sense. Jack and I are less skilled at those things, and Sue is in her element there) time to get all the permits necessary. The builder is ready to move as soon as he gets the word. There is going to be a lot of action this summer! It's very exciting.
In the meantime, we have to keep on doing what we're doing, paying the bills, keeping the horses going, working to make the money to do all this, etc. I have shifts booked in ICU all through the summer, but hopefully by the fall I'll be able to slow down a bit. It's all good, and I'm hanging in there. Luckily I still like working well enough, although there are days when actual retirement looks really wonderful.
I worked on Tuesday, had the same lady I posted about; she's doing better, I'm happy to report. Had a good shift, and managed to get off on time to catch the 22 bus, and felt quite pleased with that...until I got off to make the transfer onto the 14 at McDonald and Broadway. To my shock the whole street was blocked off by fire engines! Seems one of the businesses had had a fire. There was water everywhere, firemen and trucks on the street, and of course not a single bus getting past. I cursed a bit, then started walking. I walked all the way home from that corner, and it was only as I was almost up the long, long hill from Alma that a bus passed me. It was about a 2 or 3 km. walk, just what I wanted to do after twelve hours working. I was happy that it at least was a pleasant evening for walking. Got my exercise for sure.
My right shoulder is a bit sore tonight, from all the pulling and digging to get the garden fence and posts down. The weeds had grown so much that the chicken wire was practically part of the undergrowth. Then today being Kelly's day off, Sue and I cleaned all the stalls. I think I'd better put some ice on it (or a bag of peas, which is what I have).
It was a miserable wet day today. What's with all the cold wet stuff, weather network? It's supposed to be almost summer! The grass in the field is growing so tall that today I watched a deer crossing the field and all I could see was its head and big ears above the grass. We want to put the horses out in the field, but the grass is too wet. We may have to wait until Jack has time to mow it before anyone gets to go out on it. So don't want tummy aches from too rich wet grass!
I stopped at Walmart and got some stuff, and treated myself to a DVD, the first season of Nikita. It was on sale for $20, so I figured I could allow myself that much. I haven't spent much on myself these past couple of years, so even a $20 DVD feels like a splurge.
Hey, what the heck. I deserve it. Right? Right.
