Really feels like fall today. Cool and a bit rainy and the leaves are starting to change colour..alas, summer is heading out the door. Not that I mind the cooler weather for working, but it seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the first warm weather of summer.

I put Kyra's rain sheet on her today. She's old and a bit on the thin side, so I don't want her out in the field getting wet and chilly. Midnight, on the other hand, has more blubber on him than a bull elephant seal...no chance he'll be cold. Come to think of it, his backside is reminiscent of said elephant seal. He's a boy who enjoys his food, and anyone else's that he can grab. I got really ticked at him today; Kyra was eating her grain and I was putting on the rain sheet, and he kept trying to sneak up and grab her food. First he tried a frontal approach, and when that didn't work, he tried sneaking around behind, ever so casually, nothing to see here, move it along...and then I was in the midst of a food fight. Kyra was kicking at him, and I was trying to stay out of the way while I got her sheet done up. No harm done in the end, but he felt the sting of my dressage whip on his backside a time or two.

I went to Hamilton's Market in Aldergrove on my way home, and now my fridge is full of lovely locally grown vegetables (corn on the cob, green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, zucchini, peppers..a veritable bounty of veggie goodness). Bought some beautiful peaches from the Okanagan, and some pears and plums, and some crisp and sweet-tart apples. I haven't been to Hamilton's in ages, but it's such a great market I always end up buying more than I need because it all looks so delicious. I miss having a garden this year, but having access to local produce like that makes up for it.

I watched the Masters' Show Jumping Grand Prix from Spruce Meadows today. That's somewhere I really would like to go, it's such a beautiful venue with world class competition. They had a tribute to the late great stallion Hickstead and his rider Eric Lamaze; Eric unveiled a bronze statue of Hickstead (in full flight over a jump), and they showed clips of his greatest triumphs. I was crying like a baby by the end of it. Hickstead was truly one of the great horses.

Speaking of horses: On my way home yesterday I was driving along one of the side streets when I noticed something not usually seen in the city:
a shaggy white pony, grazing on a front lawn. No person in sight, just the pony. On closer inspection, I saw that he was tethered to a stake stuck in the lawn. That's one way of mowing the grass! I wonder if he lives in the garage.
