Snow!

The first snow of the season today. Not a lot, just enough to make the ground white. Might we have a white Christmas? We'll see.

I stopped at Greenhawk Tack this morning to pick up a new winter blanket for Florrie. Now all of the horses have nice warm winter blankets (except for Buddy and Teddy, they're too young to blanket, so they have to grow thick coats of their own)...so let it snow. Just a little, though, if you please, Weathergods.

On my way home I dropped in to see my friends at WhiteDwarf Books, and as it was the end of their day we shared a dram of single malt scotch to salute the holidays. Good thing I only had a wee bit..just enough to warm the cockles of my heart. Nice way to finish off the first snow day!

Down here in California, where the temperature normally doesn't go below 0 C, I have big arguments with people about blanketing horses. Yes, please blanket clipped horses (Zero clipped horses ever on my ranch). Yes please blanket aged horses who are clearly not coping well. Yes, please blanket that thin skinned Arab who is shivering (and get that horse a whole bunch of hay!) But that fat, shaggy quarter horse? The one who starts visibly sweating during the day? Stop it!!

This is the latest we've ever left the winter blankets; it's just been too warm. We don't put the winter blankets on until the temperature is consistently less than 10C. It's more because it gets so wet here, and when it's cold and wet, the horses aren't very happy. My quarter horse Midnight wears a winter blanket, but it's not a heavy one because he's fat enough to keep pretty warm on his own!
