A lovely day in May, tra la, tra la.
May. 4th, 2013 08:37 pmTime to bring out the summer shorts. It was hot out there today! All of a sudden it seems to be summertime..and I love it. The only thing about the heat is that it brings out the flies and makes the horses all cranky. I bought my old girl Kyra a new flysheet yesterday; fits her very nicely, and makes her a lot happier. I ordered one for Midnight; the store didn't have an 82 in stock. I don't like to leave him without a cover in the hot sun, because he has so much white on him, and white or gray horses are prone to melanomas. So he gets sunscreen on his pink nose, and a nice flysheet. Hopefully he will leave the sheet alone if I spray the front with McNasty. It's a horrible spray, made with hot pepper; not toxic, but really unpleasant.
The hot sun seems to have affected some drivers too..yesterday I almost t-boned a van. I was coming up 264th off the freeway and just as I was coming up over the little hill some jerk decided to make a U-turn right in front of me. I slammed on the brakes, and said some very rude words. The guy just kind of shrugged and went on his way. Holy crap. Took my heart a few minutes to slow down.
I'm thinking about planting some tomatoes on the patio. I really wanted to get a garden started, but the place I'm planning on putting it is still in the construction zone behind the new barn. It's going to be a great spot, but I have to wait until the barn's done. Maybe I'll get in some plants for a fall harvest. We had to pull out the kiwi bush when they put in the septic field, so I'm going to get a few cuttings from the bush and try to root them so we can plant kiwi bush mark 2. It was a great bush for the birds; they loved it and it was so neat to see them all doing aerobatics through the vines. I'd like to see if I can regrow it. I have a spot picked out behind the boys' paddock, where it can spread without getting in the way of anything.
The new barn is moving along towards completion. They still have to do the inside finishing of the living space upstairs, so it's going to be another month or so before it's done but it is just beautiful. Everyone who comes to the farm is just blown away by it. The start date for the new house is August 1st, and if the barn is any example, the house is going to be fabulous. The same construction crew is building it and they're all really excited to be doing the house. It's going to take about 10 to 12 months to build, so I'll be here in my little place in the city for awhile longer than planned. It's okay, I know it will be worth waiting for.
Lots of stuff to dream about while I'm lazing about in the lovely May sunshine. We've worked really hard to get to this point, and I'm very excited about it all. We've found a great rider to help us with the young horses, and I'm eager to get going with Rochelle. Dusty is going beautifully; Melanie is a hunter-jumper rider and is so soft and relaxed that Dusty just responds in the same way. That's what you want for a young horse.
It's going to be a good summer.
