Eww! I agree, I'd rather cockroaches than bed bugs, but both are really gross. It's a common problem in the student village (houses rented for cheap near our school), but thankfully the on-campus housing always seemed clean.
It's funny, though--I saw one in a Japanese restaurant once (something of a dive, not that clean) and my two friends with me didn't even blink. One was from Miami, said she was used to seeing bigger. The other was from Hong Kong, where they grow ginormous. I was the only one squicked! We're kind of spoiled in Canada, I think!
