Goodbye, sweet girl.

midnightsjaneMy beautiful old Thoroughbred mare Kyra died today. She somehow got cast in her stall during the night; Sue found her when she went to feed the horses this morning. Kelly and Sue managed to pull her out of the stall somehow, but Kyra couldn't get up. Sue called our Vet, but he was in Colombia visiting family. He answered his cell phone anyway, and gave us the name of another Vet, a very nice woman who came right away. I didn't know anything until I got to the farm about 10:30; I saw that Kyra wasn't in her paddock, and when I saw the Vet's truck I knew something had happened. Kyra was lying in the barn aisle exhausted from trying to get up, poor old girl. The Vet gave her pain killers and some molasses to try to raise her blood sugar and give her some energy, and Kyra really wanted to get up. She tried so hard, but it was no use, she was so weak. So I made the hard decision; there really wasn't anything else we could do except end her suffering. I held her head and kissed her, and told her how much we all loved her, and then she just went to sleep. We're going to bury her next to Phaedra and Kismet, down at the bottom of the field, the field she loved to wander in with Midnight, tomorrow afternoon.
I'm going to miss my old girl. I know we gave her a wonderful last 10 years of her life, and she was a joy to be around, feisty and somewhat opinionated, one of the only ones on the farm who could keep my boy Midnight in line. They had a great time together over the summers, hanging out in the field. I'm terribly sad, and I know I will be for some time, but I knew this day was coming. I just didn't expect it to be today.
Rest in peace, beautiful Kyra. We had fun together, didn't we?
And just to make the day, my new car got scraped on the passenger side by a truck and trailer parking in the driveway at the farm. I had stopped on my way out to say bye to Jack, and the driver of the trailer thought I was farther away than I was. Not too bad, but enough that I'm going to have to go through ICBC and take the car to a repair shop. Sigh.
