Kismet 1992-2011

It's been a terribly sad week for us. Today we had to put our beautiful Kismet down. She was 19 years old, the most beautiful and the sweetest tempered horse in the world. She's not done well ever since Teddy was born, and in spite of our best efforts, we couldn't save her. Her front feet were badly bruised after carrying such a big foal, and that bruising led to an abcess, and that abcess caused her to develop laminitis. The laminitis rapidly worsened over this last week and by yesterday it was clear that her hoof was beyond repair. She was in a lot of pain, and when our Vets came this morning, Juan said that it would only get worse. She'd dropped about 400 pounds in the last week, and was spending most of her time lying down. We tried so hard to hope that our treatment would work, but in the end, all we could do for her was to put her out of her pain. They nerve blocked her front feet so she could walk, and our poor brave girl managed to hobble out of the barn into the arena. We needed to have her where we could get the tractor in to pick her up, and we couldn't leave her on the lawn until we could get someone in to bury her, so the arena was the only place. She stood there and looked at us, and we all cried together and said goodbye, then Juan gave her the injection. It was over in less than a minute.
We are stunned, broken hearted and bewildered. Two lovely mares gone in less than four months, and now we have two boys without their mammas. Teddy was such a good boy, standing over Kismet when she was lying down in the stall all week, like a little soldier on guard. We moved him into the stall across from Buddy, so they can see each other. They'll have each other for company at least. I don't think we'll ever be able to sell either of them, Kismet and Phaedra's boys.
It was so hard, but we did the right thing for Kismet. We're going to bury her in the field, next to Phaedra.
Rest in peace, beautiful Kismet. We'll remember you forever.
