Jul. 26th, 2012 07:55 pmI was in my local produce store this afternoon buying my fresh cherries and blueberries when I bumped into the owner of the Deli I went to every Friday for ages. I would buy a grilled Caprese sandwich to take to the farm for lunch, and it got so that I didn't even have to say anything; I'd walk in and Mike would put the sandwich on the panini grill. With the tightened budget the last year or so, that little ritual went down the tubes; a $10 sandwich, no matter how delicious, just wasn't in the budget. So it's been at least a year, probably a year and a half, since I've been in the shop.
So I was surprised, and kind of tickled, when Mike said "Jane! How nice to see you! I wondered what happened to you, you just kind of fell off the face of the earth.." I was surprised that he not only remembered me, and my favourite sandwich, but also my name. We chatted for awhile, and he made me promise to drop in to say hi from time to time, even if I don't buy anything.
That's one of the things I like about living in this neighbourhood; everyone might not know my name, but they recognize my face, and notice if I'm not around.
Now I'm craving that Caprese sandwich.
