I'm watching a PBS Nature show about "strange friendships": cross species relationships that seem so unlikely that it's hard to imagine. The story of Charley, the 40 year old blind horse, who had a long term friendship with Jack, a goat who was Charley's guide for many years, caught my attention. It was so touching, watching the old horse following the billy goat through the woods to his favourite grazing spot.
It reminded me of our little odd couple: Stanley Schnauzer, and his best buddy, Biggles the cat. Biggles was a stray who wandered onto the farm one day, and decided to stay. Stanley took to him right away, and the two soon became BFFs.
They would play together for hours, and Biggles would groom Stan until he looked like he'd had a bad perm. It was a real friendship, and when Stan died, Biggles would sit on the porch, looking in through the screen door, waiting for Stan to come out again. He eventually stopped doing it, and transferred his affection to Stripey and Smokey, our two barn kittens.
Friendship is friendship, species not withstanding.
