Patio Time
Aug. 15th, 2012 08:11 pmI have to say that a day off now and then is a very good thing. My life has been rather hectic for ages, and so I've learned to appreciate the odd day when I have nothing to do but whatever the heck I feel like doing. I worked for a couple of hours on the patio this morning before it got too hot; my new neighbour commented on how nice all the plants look, but to me there were signs of neglect everywhere. I haven't had the time or the budget to do as much as I have in years past, which I feel a bit sad about. The patio garden in its heyday was so gorgeous, and now it seems just a bit plain. However I did enjoy doing some cleanup and replanting and general spiffing up this morning. Looks better now.
I walked up to the grocery store and got some more of the delicious local peaches, and some cherries, and some of the oh-so-sweet corn from Chilliwack. I am trying to take advantage of the fresh fruit while it lasts; I don't eat as much as I should, so I'm enjoying the taste treats now.
Went down to my friend's bookstore, had a nice chat and then dropped in to Grounds for Coffee for one of their famous cinnamon buns...best cinnamon buns in the city for sure.
I made supper and ate out on the patio. It was much cooler out there than in my apartment!
I had planned to go out and look at computers today, but I'm afraid laziness won out over shopping. I just couldn't get up any enthusiasm for heading out to big crowded stores....not today.
There isn't much on TV tonight, so it looks like a quiet evening with my book is in store. I have been watching season 1 of Nikita since I bought the DVD awhile ago, maybe I'll go for another episode.
Back to work tomorrow. It's been crazy busy in ICU all summer; our usual July slowdown only lasted about a week. Not sure why, but since it keeps me gainfully employed, I'm not objecting. We were really busy in our room all shift yesterday with one patient, who was super sick. It took all three of us to keep up with everything, as well as look after the other two patients. My patient was a grumpy old man who was quite ill but had made a good recovery...but he wasn't any less crotchety. Kept telling me to go away and leave him alone..but if I didn't pay attention to him, he didn't like that either! LOL. He did unbend enough to tell me that he knew that his getting better was in large part due to the good care I'd given him; I think I appreciate that kind of complement almost more than any other, because I know it was sincere, if grudging. Hee. I transferred him to the medical ward later in the afternoon, and then promptly admitted another patient from Emerg who needed emergency hemodialysis for a methanol overdose. What with one thing and another the rest of the shift flew by. I was glad to get home.
I've been taking the bus to work and back, and I do like not having to drive, but I get annoyed by all the people who carry on loud telephone conversations on the bus..like I really want to hear about all the trivial details of your life after a busy day! It was all I could do to keep from turning around and shushing the guy. I think he didn't realize how loudly he was talking.
One nice thing about bussing it is that I was given a free bus pass by some friends; my friend's husband found it, and although he is 65 he refuses to use a senior's pass... but I'll happily use it! Free is free, after all. Who cares if the bus driver knows I'm a senior citizen? I'm going to have to take the bus a lot this month to get my money's worth out of the pass! Think I'll go out to UBC to check out the Staple's store there; they have computers, and it's an easy bus trip. Oh, it makes me feel so mobile! Just flash the card at the driver and use the bus as much as I want to...for August. Then it's back to paying as I go.
Speaking of going..I'd better go turn on some lights. It's getting dark in here!
