Neil Armstrong died today. I remember very clearly the day he stepped out onto the surface of the moon, the first human to set foot on soil that wasn't of earth. It seemed like such a shining moment, an opening door onto all sorts of possibilities for the human species. It hasn't turned out quite the way I'd imagined it that day in July 1969; we haven't quite reached interstellar space, and vacations on the moon aren't on anyone's travel brochures, but it was still a very significant event. I remember standing outside a store in Sitges, Spain with my (now ex-)husband, watching the grainy figures on the TV in the window. It seemed a little unreal, but it was the beginning of my secret, and unfulfilled, dream of flying off into space.

Thank you, Mr. Armstrong, and all of the other brave humans who have blasted off of this planet to keep that dream alive. You will not be forgotten.

ETA: I turned the TV to the news just now, and there was Neil Armstrong stepping out of the lander onto the moon. History before my eyes. And there was Neil Armstrong, speaking to a group of students, telling them that the message of the moon landing was that humanity is no longer chained to this earth, and that we can achieve anything we put our minds, hearts and energy to. I hope he is right about that.
