Dec. 2nd, 2012 10:03 pmDecember already? OMG, this year has flown by. The Christmas lights are going up around town and it's starting to get that holiday feeling. I've done my little bit of Christmas shopping, just have a couple more gifts to buy and then I'm done. We've all decided that it's going to be a low key kind of Christmas, not too much fuss, because things are getting really busy around the farm.
We're tearing down the old hay barn on Tuesday (when I say we, I mean the contractor and his crew), so today we spent time clearing out all the things that were stored in it that we want to keep. Not a lot of stuff, mostly it's a lot of junk that will go with the barn. We're saving the roof, because it's only 15 years old and it's custom coloured metal. It's going to be used on the shelters in the paddocks. We moved three of the canvass shelters away from the barn; luckily the rain held off until we got most of the work done. Thank you, weather gods.
It's going to be a little chaotic for the next week; all the horses will have to stay in on Tuesday because we don't want anyone freaking out and getting hurt when all the action happens. The builder says the barn should be down by noon, and everything hauled away by the end of the day. It's kind of sad to see the hay barn go, because it's a lovely barn, almost 100 years old, but it's not structurally sound enough to renovate. The new barn will look almost the same, and will have a nice apartment upstairs, and a workshop downstairs. This isn't the best time of year to be building, but it's just the way things worked out.
It's very exciting to see our plans starting to take shape. The end results will be well worth the little bit of inconvenience now.
I got home in good time..the new Port Mann bridge opened all lanes yesterday, and it makes quite a difference. Unfortunately, it's now going to be a toll bridge :( If it cuts out all that traffic jam stuff, it will be worth the toll.
I made a sandwich for dinner, then watched Once Upon a Time. It was good. I must say I'm enjoying this season a lot. It's one of the few shows I make a point of watching every week. Sadly, TV is pretty much a wasteland.
I made two vegetable pies (leeks, potatoes, mushrooms, peas and carrots in a nice sauce) to have for dinners this week. One's for me, the other is for Sue and Jack. My place smells very nice right now.
Now I'm going to enjoy a cup of tea while I see what Harry Dresden is up to.

Date: 2012-12-03 07:19 am (UTC)I got a call today from a tenant. The creek is flooding and we kept the horses mostly in, not because it was particularly cold (50's F) but because we have had at least 6 inches of rain in the last three days and all the ditches I dug for the new water system are nothing but slots of soupy mud with a skin of grass. There is exactly one pasture they could go on, and it had a good deal of old "corral" dirt pushed onto it recently, and looks terrible despite the fact that most of it is rock within 5 inches of the surface and therefore safe. Sigh. Oh, and I'm concerned with horse tummies which are eating green grass one day and hay the next and, worse, vice versa.
Enjoy Mr Dresden.
