Quiet time
Sep. 13th, 2011 10:55 pmMy sister has gone to bed, the TV is off, and the apartment is quiet. Only the noise of the traffic going by and the whirr of the fan break the silence. I'm learning to appreciate these moments, to not automatically turn on the TV or the radio when I come in the door. I think we lose something when we fill our surroundings with noise all the time; I didn't realize how much I did that until the other day when I spent several hours just sitting and reading, without any background fillers. My mind seemed to be calmer, more tranquil after that, and I think it's because the aural stimulation was cut way down. Must remember that, and practice quiet time more often. I've noticed that I seem to cope with life better when I have allowed myself some of that quiet; I suppose it's akin to what happens with meditation.
I finished cleaning up the apartment this morning, washed the comforter on my bed and changed the sheets so that Sandy would have a clean, tidy place to sleep. I am graciously giving her my bedroom, and I'm sleeping on the sofa bed for the next two nights. She's not that fond of cats, so she needs a room with a door that closes. She's better than before, when just having a cat near her would give her palpitations; now she will even pet mine. Chloe of course is attracted to her like iron to a magnet; what is it about cats that they are drawn to the one person in the room that isn't crazy about them? Annie is very confused by the closed door; she keeps going over and standing in front of it, like it will open miraculously for her. Her space has been invaded, and she's not happy about it, LOL.
I picked Sandy up at the airport this afternoon, and we've been having a lovely time getting caught up with all the family gossip. It's been two years since her last visit here; time sure flies by. She brought me fresh blueberries, picked with her own hands from wild blueberry bushes in the bush of Northwestern Ontario, sweet and juicy, mmmmmm.
Tomorrow we're heading out to the farm to introduce her to Buddy and Teddy.
It's nice to have her here.
